Inside EBS: Dirk Hummel on the Origins of i-kon

This year, Orica proudly celebrates 25 years of Electronic Blasting Systems (EBS), a quarter-century of innovation, reliability, and customer-driven advancement in blasting technology. Since the launch of the first i-kon™ system in 2000, Orica has remained at the forefront of electronic initiation, transforming the way the mining industry approaches safety, precision, and productivity.

This milestone is also an opportunity to spotlight the people and partnerships that shaped EBS from the very beginning. Through personal stories and reflections, we dive into the history, challenges, and innovations that have defined 25 years of progress—and the vision driving the future of blasting technology. We speak with Dirk Hummel, Senior Manager of EBS Electronic Development one of the original developers of i-kon™, to explore the breakthroughs and collaborations that paved the way for safer, smarter, and more sustainable blasting solutions.

The journey began in the late 1990s, when Orica partnered with Dynamit Nobel to form Precision Blasting Systems—a joint venture that would lead to the development of the original i-kon™. At the time, the industry was dominated by non-electric and electric systems, both of which had limitations in testability, timing accuracy, and scalability.

Dirk, one of the original developers of i-kon™, recalls the early challenges:
In the early 2000s, the slogan was ‘electronic blasting is never boring’—because we were constantly solving new problems. From leakage currents to communication issues, every challenge pushed us to improve the system and make it safer and more robust.
The original i-kon™ introduced programmable timing and full testability, allowing engineers to design complex blasts with unprecedented control. Its dual-voltage safety system—patented by Orica—ensured that detonators remained inert until the blast site was cleared, setting a new benchmark for safety in the industry. Over the years, Orica’s EBS portfolio expanded to include uni tronic™, eDev™, Oseis™, ORBS™ and the revolutionary WebGen™ wireless system. Each product built on the foundation laid by i-kon™, incorporating customer feedback and field trial insights to refine performance and usability.

“The early adopters played a big role in maturing the i-kon system,” says Dirk. “They gave us access to their sites, tolerated delays for research, and even modified their infrastructure to help us test new ideas. Without that collaboration, i-kon wouldn’t be what it is today.”

The development of the NextGen EBS ASIC—a critical component in i-kon™ III and other systems—eliminated risks of unintended firing and improved reliability under extreme conditions. These advancements have helped Orica deliver over 200 million EBS units globally, with proven results across diverse mining environments.

For Dirk, the EBS journey has been deeply personal:
To me, Orica’s EBS feels like a father-son relationship. I’ve been involved from the very first sandbox experiments to the global rollout. It’s been exciting, mind-opening, and incredibly rewarding.

As Orica celebrates this milestone, the company is aso looking to what's next. That future includes exciting advancements like the release of i-kon™ III Steel and the upcoming launch of i-kon™ III Digital - systems designed to represent the next evolution in blasting technology. Designed for durability and digital integration, these systems will offer enhanced performance, flexibility, and sustainability for mining operations worldwide.

Dr Rodney Williams, Vice President of Initiating Systems, shares his perspective:
“I’m super excited about the future of EBS,” says Rodney. "With these new product lines, we’re giving our customers more options for sustainable, safe, and digitally enabled blasting operations."

Orica’s commitment to innovation continues with the Neo range of lead-free detonators, as well as the expansion of WebGen™ 200, further reinforcing its leadership in environmentally responsible blasting solutions.

As Orica marks 25 years of EBS, the celebration is not just about technology—it’s about the people, partnerships, and passion that have driven progress every step of the way. Innovators like Dirk, whose vision and persistence helped shape the foundations of electronic blasting, remind us that behind every breakthrough are individuals committed to making mining safer, smarter, and more sustainable.
