Metso Equips Yitirrti Base Metals Project in Australia

Metso has been awarded orders by GR Engineering Services (GRES) to supply key minerals processing technology for Develop Global’s Yitirrti (formerly Sulphur Springs) copper-zinc-silver project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The processing plant is designed for a capacity of approximately 1.5 million tonnes per annum as it progresses toward pre-production. Kurt Tiedemann, Group Principal Metallurgist at Develop Global, highlighted that Metso’s proven process expertise, equipment reliability, and local support were critical factors in selecting the processing package for the site.

Metso’s scope of delivery encompasses the design, manufacture, testing, and delivery of process equipment for the concentrator to support copper and zinc recovery. The package includes Nordberg® C Series™ jaw crushers, Nordberg® HP450e™ cone crushers, an apron feeder, TankCell® flotation cells, thickeners, Stirred Media Detritor (SMD) regrind mills, and online slurry analyzers. David Tulloch, Vice President, Minerals, Asia Pacific at Metso, stated that the integrated flowsheet offering, backed by lifecycle and aftermarket support from Metso’s nearby Karratha Service Centre, will ensure reliable and sustainable operations as the project transitions into production.

Additional Context
This section provides technological and market background not explicitly detailed in the original release.

Complex polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits like Yitirrti require sophisticated comminution and differential flotation flowsheets to cleanly separate fine-grained copper and zinc minerals without cross-contamination. Stirred media detritors (SMDs) and high-efficiency cone crushers allow operations to achieve ultra-fine grinding with significantly reduced specific energy consumption compared to traditional ball mills. As global demand for copper and zinc accelerates to support electrification, renewable energy infrastructure, and grid storage, maximizing mineral recovery and dewatering efficiency from mid-tier deposits has become vital for maintaining cost-competitive and sustainable mining operations.
