Jacobs supports Sydney Metro West with five station designs

Urban rail transport, infrastructure engineering, and metropolitan development projects are central to improving mobility in rapidly growing cities. In this context, Jacobs, in partnership with GHD and WSP, has been appointed to design five underground stations for the Sydney Metro West project under the Stations Package West.

The new metro line, spanning approximately 24 kilometers, will connect Greater Parramatta to Sydney’s central business district, strengthening transport links between inner and western suburbs. The project is designed to improve access to high-capacity public transport while supporting urban growth, including new housing, employment hubs and local services along the corridor.

Integrated design for major underground stations
The joint venture is responsible for delivering integrated engineering design services for five stations located at Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays. These stations form a key component of the overall Sydney Metro West infrastructure, which is being delivered by Gamuda as the lead contractor.

The design scope includes coordination across multiple engineering disciplines to ensure efficient construction, operational performance and integration with the broader transport network.

Sustainability targets in station design
A central aspect of the project is the incorporation of sustainability principles into station design. The stations are targeting a 6-Star Green Star As Built rating, indicating a focus on energy efficiency, resource management and environmental performance throughout construction and operation.

Such targets require the integration of sustainable materials, optimized energy systems and design strategies that reduce environmental impact while maintaining long-term operational efficiency.

Supporting urban growth and connectivity
The Sydney Metro West line is intended to address increasing demand for transport capacity in Western Sydney. By improving travel times and reliability, the project enhances connectivity between residential areas and economic centers, supporting regional development and accessibility.

The addition of new stations is expected to facilitate transit-oriented development, enabling more efficient land use and supporting population growth along the corridor.

This appointment builds on Jacobs’ previous involvement in the Sydney Metro West program, including environmental and climate advisory services and participation in earlier design packages. The project also reflects the company’s broader experience in large-scale rail infrastructure, with comparable projects delivered in North America, Europe and Asia.

By combining engineering expertise with sustainability-focused design, the joint venture contributes to the development of a high-capacity urban rail system aimed at meeting long-term mobility and infrastructure needs.
