Sydney Trains and SYSTRA have partnered to develop the business case and integration plan for Sydney’s NextGen Digital Train Radio System (DTRS), a program preparing the network for migration from GSM-R to the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS).
The program focuses on upgrading the existing DTRS, which is a core operational communications system across the Sydney Trains network. The objective is to address long-term equipment obsolescence while enabling a standards-aligned transition to FRMCS, the next-generation rail communications platform being adopted globally.
Under the partnership, SYSTRA will provide advisory services and systems integration planning to support investment decisions and staged delivery. The work draws on telecommunications, signalling, asset management, and human-factors engineering to ensure safety, reliability, and interoperability throughout the transition.
As Sydney Trains continues to deploy modern signalling and control systems, the upgraded radio platform is intended to support future digital applications that require higher reliability, improved performance, and tighter integration between trains and operational systems.
The engagement combines local engineering capability with SYSTRA’s global rail communications experience, with an emphasis on maintaining operational continuity while progressing toward a future FRMCS-based architecture.
